**Embarking on a Mountain Adventure: Soaring High with Ouka, the Devoted Companion**
As the first rays of the early morning sun illuminate the scene, the familiar sound of the alarm echoes at 6 A.M. It’s a routine day, and Lauriane, my girlfriend, starts preparing for her demanding 12-hour shift in the ICU. While I struggle to shake off my drowsiness, I observe her instructing Ouka, our loyal rescue dog, to wait patiently in the van a little longer – it’s not yet time for his outdoor explorations.
With 8:00 A.M. ushering in full daylight, I rouse myself from my sleepiness. Ouka senses my awakening and gently nudges me, a clear indication of his eagerness to step outside. As I open the door, he settles into a shaded spot. Our location in the Alpine region means that even during the summer, the weather remains pleasantly mild.
Our morning ritual of shared breakfast unfolds—or so I plan. In reality, Ouka finishes his meal in a hurry and then fixes me with his pleading puppy eyes, silently requesting a taste of my own food. While I enjoy my meal, I steal a quick glance at the weather forecast: a fantastic sunny day awaits, with mild winds and a gentle southward breeze predicted for later – ideal conditions for a hike and a touch of airborne adventure.
By 9:00 A.M., my backpack is carefully packed with all the necessities – a lightweight glider, my harness, helmet, Ouka’s harness, ample hydration for both of us, energy bars, my trusty 360-degree camera – and we’re ready to begin. With the load on my back minimized, takeoff becomes feasible from nearly any elevated point.
The sight of my hiking shoes sparks Ouka’s excitement, a sure sign that another escap ade is about to unfold. Sporting his canicross harness, we set off at a leisurely pace, allowing our muscles to warm up and, of course, allowing Ouka to attend to his own needs.
By 10:30 A.M., we reach our designated launch spot and take a moment to hydrate and recharge. Wind conditions are favorable, and I commence the process of setting up the glider. Ouka, in his element, indulges in his favorite activity – seeking affection from every friendly passerby. He effortlessly wins hearts and invites scratches, as he always does.
At 11:30 A.M., all systems are a go. The glider is prepared, the wind is cooperative. The time has come to take to the skies. I equip Ouka with his specially tailored flying harness – a routine he has grown accustomed to over time. Heights never faze him; he remains composed even when peering down from cliff edges.
Introducing Ouka to the concept of gliding involved treats and camping trips. I trained him to respond to the command “Take off,” signifying that he should position himself between my legs and run when I do. It serves as a safety measure for him too – if he chooses not to fly, he can run away. Ouka’s spirited personality always shines through.
At 11:35 A.M., I exclaim, “Take off, Ouka!” He swiftly positions himself between my legs. I secure him to the carabiner, awaiting the right gust of wind. “Alright, let’s go!” With the glider inflating gracefully, I signal for us to run. As our strides lengthen, the glider gradually lifts us off the ground – we’re airborne! Up in the open sky, Ouka remains unperturbed. I position my feet beneath his paws, maintaining our connection. While our spoken communication is limited, our exchanges of head scratches are frequent.
Wildlife, fellow gliders, and hikers paint a vibrant panorama below us. Ouka delights in the wind ruffling his fur. Amidst the grandeur of the mountains, we’ve discovered our own haven.
At 11:50 A.M., a 15-minute flight nears its conclusion. The landing zone comes into view. I prepare myself within the harness for a smooth touchdown. With practiced finesse, we land flawlessly. The impact varies with the wind; under optimal conditions, we could land on eggs without cracking them.
Commending Ouka for his aeronautical feat, I guide the glider to the ground. The harness is removed, and a cuddle session ensues. The elation is palpable. After packing up and engaging in conversations with fellow aviators, it’s soon time to head home. By 7:00 P.M., after finishing errands, I park in a new location. Ouka revels in the fresh air while I prepare dinner. Lauriane’s arrival after her hospital shift is a high point, met with Ouka’s uncontainable enthusiasm. His excitement upon hearing her car’s familiar sound is truly infectious.
Before Ouka’s arrival, a cloud of depression loomed over me. His adoption completely transformed my life. Ouka’s resilience mirrored my own journey. Our bond was forged swiftly; he needed me, and I needed him. Little did I realize that he would also be the connection to Lauriane, his former dog-sitter. As the sun sets against the majestic mountain backdrop, my heart swells with gratitude. Our journey has been nothing short of remarkable. The road ahead is uncertain, but with Ouka and Lauriane by my side, it promises to be an extraordinary adventure
