“From Dogfighting Victim to Arson Detection Hero: Hansel’s Incredible Journey”
Meet Hansel, a resilient and joyful dog who triumphed over a dark past. Rescued from a dog fighting ring in Tilbury, Canada, Hansel’s fate seemed bleak due to Ontario’s ban on pit bulls. Alongside 30 other canines, he faced the possibility of being put down.
However, fate had a different plan for Hansel. Rob Scheinberg emerged as a voice for these innocent dogs, convincing the court to reconsider their destiny. Hansel found refuge in Florida’s shelter system, where he was welcomed by “Dogs Playing For Life,” a non-profit dedicated to improving shelter dogs’ lives. His journey continued when he was adopted by the “Throw Away Dogs Project,” an organization in Philadelphia specializing in training exceptional K-9 officers.
After intensive training, Hansel joined the Millville Fire Department as an arson detection K-9 officer, breaking barriers for his breed. Once on the brink of demise, he now saves lives, detecting ignitable substances like gasoline and diesel with precision. His exceptional contributions were recognized with the 2021 Law Enforcement and Detection Hero Dog award.
Hansel’s impact doesn’t stop there. His success has inspired other departments to consider adopting pit bulls for similar roles. Beyond his heroic duties, Hansel formed a deep bond with his handler, firefighter Tyler Van Leer. Together, they’re an inseparable team, leading the way in their specialized field.
Tyler shared, “He is just an awesome dog. I wouldn’t ask for any other dog.” Hansel’s journey from a fighting ring victim to a life-saving hero is a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of compassion.
